Why people wear braces

Throughout history, there have been certain groups that have worn braces or suspenders. The primary reason is to hold up their pants, and generally fall under the following categories:

For necessity
Young children need suspenders because they have no stomach at all. Their pants are always falling down with all their movement and if they don’t have elastic in the waistband.

Obese males wear braces because a belt would just slip down.

Suspenders are generally incorporated into snow pants to keep snow from getting inside.
For necessity because of your occupation
Firefighters are in life and death situations, and need their pants to stay up. In fact, the back of the braces on firefighter’s pants has more connection points to ensure there are no gaps for exposure to the elements. As the old joke goes, “Why did the fireman wear red suspenders?” “To Keep his pants up!”

Loggers wear braces with their jeans to keep their pants up while out in the forest.

Plumbers are bending under sinks and cabinets. Without braces, they would be revealing too much of their rear. More plumbers should be wearing braces to avoid showing their crack.

Farmers spend their day outside doing manual labor. They do not have the patience to constantly pull up their pants. Wearing braces on their jeans provides comfort and reassurance that their pants won’t fall down during the day. Additionally, a plaid shirt, jeans, and suspenders fits a farmer image.
Cowboys sometime wear suspenders to hold up their heavy pants

Hockey players wear suspenders to hold up their over-sized hockey pants.

Fishermen wear hip waders when they go waist-deep into the water.
Clowns wear suspenders to create practical jokes, and to keep their over-sized pants from falling to the floor with one step.

Mimes wear suspenders to accent their black and white shirt

Santa Claus wears braces as he has a large stomach from Mrs. Claus’ cooking!

For status
Lawyers, bankers, and financiers do a lot of sitting down, and a belt can be uncomfortable after a while. Braces offer the proper comfort and style with trousers that are a little larger at the waist and paired with a business suit. In addition, they are required with a vest and suit. Braces are generally worn by older, well-established businessmen, but there’s no rule that says young professionals cannot wear braces.
Gordon Gekko from the Wall Street movie

Skinheads use suspenders to display status. The status changes from region to region, and generation to generation, so it’s difficult to define.

Zoot suits were notorious for having very high-waisted pants. The pants can only be held up with braces.

Lederhosen use suspender straps to hold up the leather shorts. These shorts do not have a belt and because leather does not stretch or fit comfortably to the body, they would fall down without the necessary straps. Additionally, the straps denominate family class or regions. More details available here.

Others
So why don’t other groups use braces? Such as pregnant women? There are some specialized suspenders for pregnant mothers but why not wear suspenders with your maternity pants? They are much more comfortable than wrapping more material around your waist.

Additionally, there's one more significant reason, which I'll discuss in the next post.

In conclusion, braces have been worn by a lot of different people. But when it comes down to it, people use braces and suspenders because they are very comfortable and stylish.

Position of Back Junction

Nowadays braces (and suspenders) cross over in the back. Originally, braces were simply straps of material that were made of leather attached to pants, similar to this...
These straps will slip off
the shoulders
Case in point - the strap slip off
the shoulder
Because of the normal body movement, the straps were prone to slip off the shoulders and not serve their purpose. Therefore, to rectify this problem the straps were crossed over in the back. Additionally, the invention of elastic and application to suspenders greatly improved the flexibility of braces to remain on the shoulders.

The straps on X-back braces and Y-back braces come together in a junction. The position of this junction relative to the wearer is important for comfort and style. If the junction is too low, the straps will be more prone to slip off the shoulders and will be uncomfortable on the shoulder blades.

If the junction is too high, the straps will be nestled around your neck and feel uncomfortable, as illustrated below.

Not all junctions are movable (see above). In these cases, you will have to live with the style, or get new suspenders. However, if the junction is adjustable, you can move it to the correct location, as described above.

Take note of this vintage photo of 2 men strolling down the street, wearing high-waisted pants, reminiscent of the zoot suit era in the early 20th century:

Here's a close-up with emphasis added to show the 2 different styles and the detail of the back junction. The man on the left is wearing X-back braces with the junction rather high and the rear buttons spread apart, in line with the back of his legs. His partner on the right is wearing Y-back braces with the junction very close to the neck.

These appear to be identical pairs of pants, with brace buttons in the same place on both pants. However, there worn with two different styles of back junctions. The spacing matters: X-back braces have more distance between the junction and the waistline, while Y-back braces are shorter. The pants of the man on the right are being pulled together at the middle seam from the brace tabs of the Y-back braces, while the pants of the man on the left are neatly in line.

Where should the junction be located?
So where should the junction go? The junction should be located just below the shoulder-blades, to allow the straps to run over the shoulders and above the shoulder blades. This results in the junction being just above the centre of the back and provides the greatest comfort. Here are photos illustrating correct position of the junction:
Notice that the junction is mid-back – so the straps cross above and around the shoulder blades.

  • Where do you position your back junction?
  • Where do you find it most comfortable?

    Braces width

If you've worn suspenders for any period of time, you will soon notice the width of braces is a key factor in wearing them. The width is an important part of the overall look and feel of the braces. Generally, wider width's are for functional purposes and narrower width's are for style.
However, the width should be proportional to your body size. For example, the braces below are too wide for this overall outfit and do not fit her frame proportionately. Narrower suspenders should have been used.

You can sometimes push the edge of the wide verses thin, depending on the rest of the outfit. Take the following example below. As the bowtie is exaggerated and the pants are super high waisted, the wider suspender straps fit the look.
    Appropriate proportions

The width is proportional to the shorts

With that in mind, the width also varies based on the type of the outfit. For instance, for business suits, the straps are generally 1 or 1.25 inches, as shown below. However, given the smaller size of this gentlemen, the straps appear out of proportion - he would be better suited for thinner straps.
Braces for suits are generally wider

For modern wear in 2010, the width is narrow – generally 0.5 inches. Both are acceptable and depend on the overall look you are trying to achieve.

Some people feel that narrower braces twist and bind with wear, while wider ones feel bulky and uncomfortable. So try out a few different widths to see what feels best for you.

Personally, I like to wear slightly wider straps (1.25 to 1.5 inches wide). This spreads the tension on my shoulders as I wear them throughout the day. However, my girlfriend loves thinner straps (3/4 inch wide), as it's slimmer and more 'modern'. So I also have some braces that are 3/4-inch wide and wear them frequently.
Looking at vintage photos, I see men wearing both widths - wider and narrower, so both are acceptable.

    • What width of braces do you wear?
    • Do you find larger width braces uncomfortable?
